‘There’s a first-aid kit in the car,’ she told him. ‘It’s standard equipment over here.’

‘That’s right,’ he nodded. ‘I remember seeing it on the floor in the back. Good!’ He carefully unwrapped his bandages, sniffed disgustedly at his raw wounds and gingerly inspected them, then went and showered.

After the laving water had taken something of the sting out of his sore places, he called: ‘Hey, and I’m hungry! We’ll get into the mountains proper and eat there. Should be no problem getting rooms this time of year. Skiing season doesn’t get underway for six or seven weeks yet.’ ‘I thought you’d never been in the Harz before?’ ‘I haven’t,’ he answered, carefully soaping himself. He frowned through the streaming water.

‘Must have read about it.’

‘Richard, there’s something I wish you’d explain …’ He switched the shower off, came out dripping.

‘What’s that?’ he asked.

Patting him dry with a towel, she said: ‘Back there where you had your attack, something happened. It was really very strange. As strange as anything else that has happened.’ ‘Oh?’

‘You tried to say “keys” but couldn’t make it - tried to say “boot”, too. But I knew what you were saying anyway - that I was to take the keys and open the boot. I mean, I just knew it - in my mind.’

He looked serious for a moment, then shook his head and grinned. ‘Maybe you’re telepathic!’ Lynn’s expression remained the same.

‘Not me, Richard,’ she said. ‘You! You put the words there in my head. You couldn’t say them, so you found another way …’

While she went to the car for the first-aid kit, he thought about what she had said. Back at Calm Lawns during his ‘chats’ with Gorvitch, he had sometimes felt that if he really tried he could make the doctor do whatever he wanted him to. He’d used to get this feeling when an attack was imminent, when he was under pressure. But of course he had never really put it to the test, because that was crazy …

Wasn’t it?

Twenty minutes later, wearing fresh bandages and with his face tidied up as best Lynn could manage, Stone paid the bill and they left…

Dorothy Ellis passed the information on: Garrison had used his banker’s ID tag to pay a bill in a small hotel near Gottingen.

By 4:00 p.m. Edward Bragg was on a jet-copter shuttle to Hanover. Less than an hour later he hired himself a brand new Opel Komet equipped with a radio-telephone and by 5:00 he was heading south for Hildesheim.

Some time before that, however, Darren and Michael Jackson had already visited Herr Fischer’s motel.

There they had learned that the English Herr and his lady had set off just a little while ago for Bad Harzberg … or was it Braunlage? Yes, yes, it was Braunlage! Herr Fischer could not be mistaken - he had heard them mention the place by name. Braunlage, yes …

Old Rudi Fischer could hardly know it, but he had done the fugitives a great favour. Stone had settled for St Andreasberg.
